This revised edition of Practice in Music Theory Grade 6 is part of the series of the highly recommended theory coursebooks for students preparing for the ABRSM examinations. More to that, it is the first of three comprehensive coursebooks that guide students towards achieving a high standard of knowledge in harmony, counterpoint, melodic writing and score analysis that spans almost four centuries of Western musical history. The Josephine Koh instructional approach here is academic, yet musically conceived with ample musical illustrations and examples. The mastery of the basic principles of harmony is presented in Part I, while Part II introduces students to the more creative realm of compositional techniques and score analysis.
Part I – Harmony
The foundational principles of harmony are introduced here: 4-part writing, 2-part counterpoint, concepts of traditional chord progression, use of inversions, principles of voice-leading, and non-harmony notes. Harmonic guidelines and rules are clearly illustrated and supported by actual music. Exercises are progressively structured to ensure a good grasp of theoretical concepts.
Part II – Melodic Composition and Analysis
Melodic composition is taught through an analytical approach. The concepts of phrasing, use of motifs, modulations and melodic contour are illustrated with authentic extracts. Through learning with the great masters, the technical skills are emphasized in the creative process. Skills in score analysis involve the acquisition of a sound musical knowledge, history and style. Just as active listening is important, readings on composers, musical genres, and works contribute much to the eventual development of the musician. Appendix II and III provide guidance for the basic research work required of the student at this level. Musical Forms and Terms along with a good music dictionary are appropriate reference texts.
